How Can I Help You?
I've worked as a teacher and a private tutor for over 17 years with students in 1st grade through college; I'm here to help.
I've worked as a teacher and a private tutor for over 17 years with students in 1st grade through college; I'm here to help.
My name is Paul. I'm an L.A. based educator who looks beyond the classroom to ensure that students are heard, seen, and supported, and that their academic and social-emotional needs are met.
I have a BA in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Pittsburgh and an MA in School Counseling from PennWest, Edinboro.
I currently work as a high school teacher at Crossroads School in Santa Monica, CA, where I'm in my tenth year, teaching in the History Department. I've taught courses such as Ancient World Civilizations, Modern World Civilizations, and a Senior elective, Modern Gender Studies, which I developed and for which the course received UC approval status. I also taught a Spanish 1 course during the 2022-23 school year.
Prior to my role at Crossroads, I spent almost five years at Campbell Hall in Studio City, CA, where I filled long-term substitute positions and maternity/paternity leaves in both the Middle School and High School divisions in the English and History Departments.
Concurrently, I've worked privately with roughly 70 students in Los Angeles, New York, Boston, and London. My students have been enrolled in public, charter, and private schools as well as universities. I have many families that I've worked with for consecutive years, often starting with students in 7th or 8th grade and seeing them throughout their high school careers- and in some cases- beyond.
I've worked with students in areas from organizational skills and general homework help, to individualized studies in Humanities, Spanish, French, and Essay and Focused Writing.
I also specialize in assisting in formatting and editing college application essays for those students who need guidance to get their essays started and shaped to where they need to be for submission. This also includes tailoring essays and supplements for individual schools and their requirements, as well as helping student athletes getting on top of their individualized needs.
My goal is to make the students I work with feel supported and heard. I want to help them find their own voices in the work that they do. I strive to make them feel empowered and able to advocate for themselves. I get to know students and families on an individual level, which makes me able to see both their potential and growth, and to guide our time together to best suit what they need. I pay attention to details and nuance. I understand that none of my students are the same and it's important to me that they know that. I want your child to be their best!

"Paul worked with my daughter 10th through 11th grades. He was really patient and forged a very trusting relationship with her. He's not the type of tutor who just gave the answers but instead gave her the confidence she needed to soar. Paul is really smart and was able to work with my daughter across a number of subjects, avoiding the need for multiple tutors. He's terrific and I'd recommend him in a heartbeat."
-Parent, worked with student in 10th and 11th grades
"Our family (two sons) worked with Paul from middle school, through high school and it even extended into college long distance. Paul was always on top of everything for our boys, guided them to success and kept them motivated even when the pressure was at its highest. Having Paul in our home was a pleasure…he became part of our family. -Laurie, parent, worked with students from 7th grade through college
“Paul is a delight. His work with our daughter over the last year has increased her academic confidence and performance at school. And yet their time together never felt like a chore. Our daughter truly enjoys spending time studying with him. Imagine, a 14 year old not complaining about time with a tutor!" -Stephanie, parent of 8th grade student
“Paul was able to help me in many subjects during my middle school years. He is one of few tutors I have met who has this ability. More importantly, Paul is a really good person. He is patient and really wants to help others learn and succeed.” -Danny, Campbell Hall School (Class of 2019), worked together from grades 7-9.
"I began working with Paul in the seventh grade and through all four years in high school. Growing up, I had countless tutors. It began to get frustrating when my family and I couldn't find the right person until someone recommended Paul. Paul was able to tutor me in multiple classes which is something that was very helpful. Even if there was a day where I did not need Paul's help but he still came over, he was good at making me focus on getting my work done. Not only was Paul very intelligent and knowledgeable in the fields he was helping me with, he was great company. He showed interest in my life and gave me great advice if I was struggling with a challenge. I am very glad that I found Paul as he helped me a ton in my early years in education. Not only did he make life a lot easier on me, we have stayed in touch and he is still a close friend." -RJ, Notre Dame High School, Class of 2019, TCU, Class of 2023, worked together from 7-12th grades and college
“Paul not only tutored me through years of writing assignments, but became a trusted friend and confidant during the most tumultuous years of high school.” -Oliver, Class of 2019, worked together from 7-12th grades and college

Q: What are your rates?
A: Rates are listed in the Contact Me section below. All rates begin with an hour and are charged thereafter in 30 minute increments.
Q: I don't see Math or Science related subjects listed. Do you work with students in these areas?
A: While I can help your younger students with general Math and Science work, my skill set lies outside these subjects; you'd probably be better suited looking for a tutor who specializes in STEM areas, for which I'm happy to provide referrals.
Q: We have two kids who need help. Do you work with families?
A: Of course. We can work together to make a schedule that fits the needs of your family and my availability.
Q: We need a hybrid of in-person and remote. Is that possible?
A: Yes. I realize that students and their families are busy, schedules shift, and last minute things come up. I have a 24 hour cancellation policy, but can certainly adjust as appropriate when and as needed.
Q: Do you work over the summer break?
A: I work with students to do remediation or to brush up on skills for the upcoming year over the summer, but most of my summer availability entails college essay work for those students who want to get ahead before the stress of Senior year hits. Most of this work is done remotely, as families (and I) tend to travel throughout the summer.
We'll find a way to make our relationship work, regardless of the platform. I can be flexible if you're flexible.
